About us
REACH Mental Wellness, RMW, is a non-profit that addresses the mental health needs of the Indo-American community in Greater Houston. Our goal is to decrease the stigma and shame associated with mental illness and provide a network of resources for people who seek help.
To establish our identity we posed some questions and came up with answers.
Why is there a need for an organization to address mental illness in the Indo American community in Greater Houston?
- Increase in the number of suicides, mental illness especially post-Covid
- Lack of empathy and community support for people/caregivers of people with mental illness
- Social isolation due to mental illness
- Denial of mental illness as a treatable illness
- Lack of education that people with mental illness do and can lead productive lives with treatment
- Lack of perception that mental illness is not any different from physical illness
- Lack of awareness of existing resources in the mental illness arena
- Hesitancy to connect with mental health practitioners (social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists).
- Perception of Mental illness as a personal weakness that can be overcome by “sheer willpower”
- Lack of mental health treatment that is “culturally attuned”
